Keep you dog cool this summer

Hot weather can lead to cases of heatstroke in dogs; sadly this is a serious condition which can be fatal. Fortunately there are simple steps you can take to keep your dog cool and avoid the problem.

1. Make sure they always have access to a cool shaded place.
2. Your dog should always have access to plenty of drinking water; in hot weather you can add a few ice cubes to keep it nice and cool. Refill their bowl with fresh water regularly.
3. Allow fresh air to cool your house by opening windows. You can help keep the house cool by closing curtains in rooms facing the sun.
4. Don’t leave your dog somewhere that can trap the heat such as a conservatory, greenhouse or a caravan/tent.
5. Don’t overdo their exercise or play and take a break often.  Avoid the hottest part of the day -11am-3pm. Ideally go out early morning or at night. Take some water for them to drink on the walk.
6. Dogs die in hot cars. Don’t leave your dog in a parked car on a hot day, not even briefly.
7. Try to avoid long car journeys, if you must travel keep the car as cool as possible. Take plenty of water and let your dog out when you stop for breaks
8. Ways to help your dog cool off:

• Wet them with cool water all over
• Let them get into a paddling pool (with or without the kids)
• Taking them for a swim in a safe place
• Give them some ice cubes to lick
